Integers Subtracting Integers

Solve The temperature in Anchorage, Alaska was 8°F in the morning and dropped to -5°F in the evening. What is the difference between these temperatures? Solution The distance from +8 to 0 is 8, and the distance from 0 to -5 is 5, for a total of 13. +8 - -5 =  +13. The difference is 13 degrees.

4 Steps to Subtracting Integers Rewrite the first number. Change operation sign from subtraction to addition. Change the second number to its opposite. – to +, + to – Follow the rules for adding integers and solve.

Steps to Subtracting Integers Example: -9 – (-7) = Rewrite the first number. Change operation sign from subtraction to addition. Change the second number to its opposite. – to +, + to – Follow the rules for adding integers and solve. -9 – (-7) = -9 + (-7) = -9 + 7 = -9 + 7 = -2

Subtracting Integers 6 – 14 = -9 – (-11) = -5 – 10 = 31 – (-17) = -8 2 YOUR TURN…. 6 – 14 = -9 – (-11) = -5 – 10 = 31 – (-17) = -8 2 -15 48
