Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures <http:// ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair <stuart.kerry@philips.com> as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE 802.11 Working Group. May 2006 doc.: IEEE 802.11-06/0xxxr0 May 2006 Abstract This is a summary of the liaison request from TIA TR-41.4 contained in IEEE 802.11-06/0557r0. It seeks information on whether 802.11 has mechanisms in place to support admissions control and prioritization requirements necessary for emergency calls from VoWLAN phones. Steve Whitesell, TIA TR-41 Steve Whitesell, TIA TR-41
TIA Standard on VoWLAN Phones May 2006 TIA Standard on VoWLAN Phones Currently under development by Subcommittee TR-41.4, IP Telephony Infrastructures. Includes requirements on admission control and prioritization for voice calls. Must be able to support high priority for emergency calls. Considering introduction of prioritized call signalling at layer 2 (e.g., specific information about priority call level in the ADDTS request). Steve Whitesell, TIA TR-41
TR-41.4 Admission Control and Prioritization Requirements May 2006 TR-41.4 Admission Control and Prioritization Requirements Multiple priorities on voice call access for the ability to prioritize these calls at the MAC level (EDCA or HCCA) Bandwidth reservation for the prioritized voice calls to guarantee that any emergency calls established by the VoWLAN phone will be granted by the AP Pre-emption of any existing lower priority voice call at the AP level in order to establish the new higher priority call Ability to establish an emergency call from a VoWLAN phone even if the phone is not authenticated or associated Steve Whitesell, TIA TR-41
May 2006 Questions for 802.11 Do 802.11 standards currently have all necessary mechanisms defined to support desired TR-41.4 admission control and prioritization requirements? If not, what capabilities are missing? Is there a projected roadmap and time frame for getting there? Steve Whitesell, TIA TR-41
