Synthesis Essay 11 AP

Standard: Key Ideas and Craft and Structure RI.11-12.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says. RI.11-12.6: Determine an author’s purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is particularly effective, analyzing how style and content contribute to the power, persuasiveness, or beauty of the text. W 11-12.1 - Argument standard, components a-e W.11-12.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

Color code Argument ORDER: Final Argument to be graded Turn in your Argument on top, coded as follows: Yellow—Claim and sub-claims Blue—Data /Evidence from sources Pink—Warrant—your explanation of the connection between the claim and data Red Pen—Awkward or troubling constructions Green—1st person anecdotes ORDER: Final Argument to be graded Three annotated columns Two or three sources on same topic for synthesis Biography

Columnist Project Friday—1st (cow)—3rd and 6th—new lab Monday—1st, 3rd, 6th—new lab Task one—Biography Task two—Analysis of Three Columns/Same Columnist/ Similar topics This task asks you to detail the resources of language/classic appeals used by your columnist. Typed study text approach. Task three—Depth Analysis of One Column This is your argument about the strength of your columnist’s argument. Is the original column’s argument sound and convincing? (You may synthesize the original source with the two other, outside sources to make your argument) Task four—Reflection This is your chance to tell me how you felt about this assignment. Are you more informed?

Writing a Synthesis Argument Pretend you are a fellow columnist responding to an argument (column) of choice from your task #1 columnist. Defend, challenge, or qualify one (column) argument made by your chosen columnist. Synthesize from that original column, as well as at least two other sources, as you make YOUR ARGUMENT.
