Why take notes? To minimize your “rate of forgetting” By 2nd day we will have lost 50%-80% of the lecture if not reviewed By day 7 we will remember even less By day 30 we will only retain about 2%-3% Take organized notes and do something with them = Remember 90-100% indefinitely and recall time will be faster

Why take notes? Cornell note taking stimulates critical thinking skills. Note taking helps students remember what is said in class. A good set of notes can help students work on assignments and prepare for tests outside of the classroom.

Why take notes? Good notes allow students to help each other problem solve. Good Notes help students organize and process data and information. Helps student recall by getting them to process their notes 3 times. Writing is a great tool for learning!

History of Cornell Notes Developed in 1949 at Cornell University by Walter Pauk. Designed in response to frustration over student test scores. Meant to be easily used as a test study guide. Adopted by most major law schools as the preferred note taking method.

STUDENTS CAN BE PREPARED TO TAKE TESTS! Cornell Notes - Students organize their notes into three parts Students develop questions based on the lecture that they can later use to prepare for tests Students summarize the key points at the end of the lecture

Definitions, specific detail, important information – who, what, when, where, why Paraphrase – put it in terms you understand A 3 to 4 sentence summary across the bottom, in the Summary section.

Now its your turn to practice Cornell-Note Taking! You will take notes from the El Paso Times Article – “Students Succeed With More Effective Class Notes” and The Curve of Forgetting.”

“Students succeed with more effective class notes” You will be given Cornell note paper with the key terms for the left hand column. You will read the article and take notes on the right hand side. Remember to look for Who, What, When, Where, & Why as you read and include that information in your notes. Once you have complete taking notes about the article write a short summary at the bottom of the page .
