Concept Check 1. What process creates sediment? Weathering & Erosion 2. How is an igneous rock formed? Cooled magma 3. How is a sedimentary rock formed? Sediment is compacted (squished) together 4. How is a metamorphic rock formed? Changed by heat & pressure 5. List the particles from biggest to smallest in size : Clay, Sand, Silt Sand, Silt, Clay

Accumulation Runoff from hills and mountains accumulates (builds up) in lakes, rivers, and oceans. Lakes, ponds, lagoons, reservoirs, etc.

Precipitation Any form of water that falls from the sky: Rain, hail, snow, sleet, & freezing rain Crystals/droplets group together until a cloud cant hold anymore & “precipitates” fall from the sky Cold (below 32) = Snow Warm (above 32) = Rain Mix = Sleet, Hail

Condensation Water vapor forms near the surface (warmer), it rises (gets colder), turns into tiny crystals & groups together Clouds, fog, etc.

Runoff Extra water, from rain, snowmelt, or other sources, that flows over the land surface Can also flow and be collected underground as groundwater

Evaporation When the heat from the sun warms up water (liquid) and turns it into water vapor (gas).

Transpiration Plants, such as trees, take water from the soil, extra water pushed out through the leaves as water vapor (gas) Helps keep plants cool in the same way that sweating keeps animals, such as humans, cool.

How does the Earth’s water cycle stay balanced? The amount of precipitation that falls equals the amount of water that evaporates!

SURPRISE!!! What is it?
