Evolution Quick Vocab

Homologous structure- organisms that share a common ancestor but have different functions (example: human’s arm and bird’s wing; common ancestor but two different functions) Analogous structure- organisms that do not share a common ancestor however have similar functions due to environment (bat’s wing and bird’s wing; do not share common ancestor, but have similar functions)

You cannot evolve in your lifetime Evolution occurs by natural selection Vestigial structure- something that serves no use to an organism anymore (example: the human tailbone) The #1 way to kill/make a species go extinct is to change its natural habitat (Bill Nye) Does the size of your house determine how tall you can be? No… Sooo… what determines height? Mainly genetics
