“There are one hundred and ninety-three living species of monkeys and apes. One hundred and ninety-two of them are covered with hair. The exception is a naked ape self-named Homo sapiens.”  The Naked Ape (1967) introduction Desmond Morris 1928- English anthropologist 12 BIOLOGY, CH 12

“Man with all his noble qualities “Man with all his noble qualities ... still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin.”  The Descent of Man (1871) closing words Charles Darwin 1809-82 English natural historian 12 BIOLOGY, CH 12

Hominins to hominids The order Primates includes monkeys and apes. Apes – which refers to gibbons, orang-utans, gorillas and chimpanzees – also includes humans. Hominids refers to a group of primates that walk upright and have relatively large brains – humans and the great apes belong to this group. Hominins is a subgroup of hominids and is made up of all humans and all human-like species that are known only from fossils. 12 BIOLOGY, CH 12
