Section 4.4 Simplifying Fractions Algebra Concepts Section 4.4 Simplifying Fractions

Equivalent things look different but have the same value

Equivalent fractions-two different fractions that describe the same part of a whole

You can find equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Find equivalent fractions #1 3 4 #2 4 5 #3 2 3

You can also find equivalent fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.

Fraction in simplest form- numerator and denominator of a fraction have no common factors other than 1.

Write these fractions in simplest form #1 24 30 #2 40 50 #3 18 21

Sometimes fractions have variables. Write the prime factorizations of the numerator and denominator Cross out any common factors Multiply remaining factors in the numerator and denominator.

Write in simplest form! #1 40 50 #2 4𝑥 𝑦 2 16 𝑥 2 𝑦 5 #3 26 𝑟 5 𝑠 13𝑠
