Polar and Non-polar Covalent Bonds
Presentation transcript:

Molecular Polarity Just like bonds, molecules can be: polar (have + & - sides) or non-polar (no charges!) A Polar molecule has:  One end with a positive (+) charge   (+)Na—Cl(-) *And one end with a negative (-) charge Polar molecules are also called Dipole molecules (2 poles) A Non-Polar molecule has:         * No (+/-) charges because the bond polarity is             balanced (due to shape) Br-Mg-Br

- + Is the Molecule Polar or Non-polar? Find the VSEPR Shape of the molecule – Most linear, trigonal planar, & tetrahedral molecules are NON-POLAR! Most pyramidal and bent molecules are POLAR! Example 1:  carbon dioxide: Non polar         Example 2: Dihydrogen monoxide: Polar                    - +
