Look at the back of your periodic table Look at the back of your periodic table. Identify the most common charge elements end up with after attaining Noble Gas Configuration for the following columns: 1 2 13 14 15 16 17 Warm-Up 12/3/13

Ionic Bonding: Metals with Nonmetals 2/3/13

From yesterday: When elements gain or lose electrons to get a Noble Gas Configuration, they become “ions.” Metals lose electrons Nonmetals gain electrons Ions

Cations= positive ions Anions= negative ions Ions

Polyatomic Ion= an ion with more than one type of element Polyatomic Ion= an ion with more than one type of element. All atoms involve are already bonded together Poly= many (See Common Ion Sheet for examples, or the back of your Periodic Table) Can also serve as cations or anions in ionic bonds. Polyatomic Ions

Determining Ionic Formulas What specific ionic compound forms depends on the ions involved. MAIN RULE: You need enough cations and anions to allow all atoms to reach Noble Gas Configuration. This will depend on the # of valence electrons the atoms can give away or gain. Determining Ionic Formulas

Complete the Ionic Bonding Activity to practice creating ionic compounds. Both sheets are due by tomorrow, so stay on task! Your Job
