The Four Writing Traits: Organization

What is organization? The internal structure of a piece of writing

Things to think about when organizing a piece of writing: 1. Clear beginning, middle, and end 2. Good sense of sequencing 3. Enticing or exciting introduction or “hook” 4. Strong transitions 5. Easy-to-follow 6. Well thought out details 7. Powerhouse conclusion

Organization is like . . . a puzzle; each piece must be put in the right order for it to fit and make a whole picture.

Organization is like . . .

Organization Rubric 6: Effectively organizes ideas in a clear, logical, detailed, and coherent manner using appropriate structures to enhance the central idea or theme. 5: Compelling order moves reader smoothly through the text; inviting introduction; satisfying conclusion; sequencing is logical; smooth transitions between ideas. 4: Order is clear and moves reader through text; good introduction and conclusion; logical sequence. 3: Order is strong enough to avoid confusion; recognizable introduction and conclusion; sequencing shows some logic, but may seem predictable. 2: Limited sense of order and direction; weak introduction and conclusion; awkward transitions. 1: Lacks a sense of order and purpose; no real lead or conclusion; ideas are strung together in a loose or random fashion.
