Presentation transcript:

Oxygenated Fuels in Flames Lisa D. Pfefferle, Chemical Engineering, Yale University 400 nm incand. C-C-C-C-C pentane; YSI = -7.9 1064 nm laser light PMT C-C-C-C-C-C hexane; YSI = 0.0 C-C-C-C-OH 1butanol; YSI = -13.0 air air OH test compound C-C-C tert-butanol; YSI = -4.5 CH4 / N2 C The experimental configuration on the left was used to measure yield-based sooting tendencies (YSI’s) for a large number of regular and oxygenated hydrocarbons. The results on the right show that the YSI’s depend strongly on molecular structure and are comparable for alcohols and regular hydrocarbons.
