The Normal Force The normal force is a force that opposes the Earth’s gravitational attraction and is perpendicular to the surface that an object rests.
In practice we are given an angle (generally from the horizontal or vertical) and we use trigonometry 20N 20 sin 300N cos 300N.

Forces on an Inclined Plane

Normal force and perpendicular component of weight are equal. Parallel component of weight and friction force determine acceleration of object ma = Fp - Ff

Mutually Perpendicular

Practice 1 A car of mass m is on an icy driveway at an angle of 20o. A) Determine the acceleration of the car, assuming the incline is frictionless. B) If the length of the driveway is 25.0 m and the car starts from rest at the top, how long does it take to travel to the bottom? C) What is the car’s speed at the bottom? Answers A – 3.35 m/s2, B – 3.86 s C – 12.9 m/s

Practice 2 In order to start a car some people let it roll down a hill then put it into gear to get the car to drive. If an 810 kg car starts on a hill with an incline of 10º, so that the car would roll 25 meters in 8 seconds, starting from rest. What was the coefficient of friction for this hill? Answer – 0.095
