10/29 Objectives 1. Critically read and interpret the second section two, chapter 9 from Orwell’s 1984. 2. Analyze the saying “Ignorance is Strength” and how that saying is true in Orwell’s 1984. 3. Connect Goldstein’s book to Communist ideals

An Oligarchy is rule by a small group. Collectivism is the ownership of the means of production (capital) by the people. Bourgeoisie – Marxist term for “property owners”/those who owned the means of production Proletariat – Marxist term for those were were “property- less,” or for those who sell their labor as a means to survive Socialism – Theory in which means of production is owned by the people (government), and in which resources are re- distributed to the general population Marxism: theorizes that the working class will overthrow the ruling class and establish a “class-less” society (a form of socialism)

Marx/Goldstein’s book!!! Look at the similarity of language!! 1984 is classified as SATIRE Satire - the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
