TSW use graphing as a tool in data analysis Constructing Graphs TSW use graphing as a tool in data analysis

1. Spacing Use the entire area given Pre-plan

2. Scale Each square must equal the same amount of “X” and “Y”

3. Axes Usually the IV goes on the X-Axis and the DV goes on the Y-Axis ALWAYS label both axes…be sure to include units as well

It is ALWAYS important to… Be very accurate Be very neat Be sure you know what type of graph to use Average data if there are multiple trials

Other helpful info… Title your graph Include a legend and label with units if you have multiple lines or bars on your graph Look hard at your graph…is it clear? Neat? Large enough? Does it show what happened?

To analyze a graph, look for a trend Positive effect of X on Y * As X goes up, so does Y

To analyze a graph, look for a trend Negative effect of X on Y * As X goes up, Y goes down

To analyze a graph, look for a trend No effect of X on Y * As X goes up, Y does not change

To analyze a graph, look for a trend Cannot see a clear trend * As X goes up, Y goes up and down in no clear pattern

To analyze a graph, look for a trend Positive effect of X on Y, to a point * As X goes up, Y goes up until a specific level is reached, then there is no effect

To analyze a graph, look for a trend Positive and negative effect of X on Y * As X goes up, Y goes up. At some point, this reverses and X has a negative effect on Y.
