SUMMARY / BACKGROUND Joe and Mary John, CEO Anonymous Letter Joe—directed by Mary to reply to letter Software not working as expected

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION Mary wants Joe to compose letter with inaccurate documentation What should Joe do?

Alternatives Joe can reply as Mary directs Joe can reply with accurate information Joe can speak to John privately Joe can quit his job Joe can refuse to reply

Evaluation: Joe writes a reply according to Mary’s direction Utilitarian: Mary is happy Joe is being dishonest with himself; if discovered, could be fired John is being deceived Company is losing money John’s family will suffer if he is depressed with his decision ; will suffer if fired

Evaluation: Joe writes a reply according to Mary’s direction Rights Approach John’s right to know the truth is being ignored The company stakeholder’s rights are violated since money is being spent on a faulty program

Evaluation: Joe writes a reply according to Mary’s direction Justice Approach It is unfair to John and the other stakeholders who will be spending money on the faulty program It is unfair for Mary to threaten Joe with losing his new position

ACTION PLAN Solution: Joe will write a reply with accurate information Reasons: Mary will be the only one most affected Joe will be honest with himself John will be given accurate info The other stakeholders will not be losing money unknowingly, although it may cost money to replace program It is unfair of Mary to threaten Joe for noncompliance

ACTION PLAN In order to prevent this situation from occurring in the future, a policy is to be put in place which states that an employee may not lose his/her position when disagreeing with a supervisor.
