Longmont’s Renewable Energy Future: We’re out in front! Now What? This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

Longmont Leads the Way to 100% Renewable Energy Longmont Resolution: January 9, 2018 Fort Collins Resolution: October 2, 2018 Estes Park Resolution: November, 2018 Loveland Resolution: November, 2018 PRPA Resolution: December 4, 2018 We call this the Domino Theory!

How we Make and Use Electricity Now Mostly Coal and Natural Gas Coal turbines work best running all the time Slow and costly to start up and shut down What if we need extra power? Small natural gas plants start and stop faster These “Peaker Plants” give a boost at need What’s wrong with that? Major Polluter Non-Renewable Global Warming

The Better Way A Clean, Hopeful Future Sun and Wind give us energy without pollution or warming A Clean, Hopeful Future Exciting changes as we transition from Fossil to Renewable All of us have the opportunity to participate This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

Adapting to Renewable Energy Yesterday, our utilities matched their supply to our demand Tomorrow, we will match our demand to the fluctuating supply How will we do it? Conservation is a big deal, of course Use automation to use power when it is available Use storage devices to save power when there’s more than we need Adapting to Renewable Energy

Time of Use Pricing – Not a New Idea Today, supply is constant Demand (what we use) varies Rates are highest when demand is highest Rates are lowest when demands are lowest Encourages people to shift consumption to lower price bands Time of Use Pricing – Not a New Idea $ $$ $$$ Time of use clock graphic courtesy of Hydro-One, Ontario.

BUT… Solar Power stands Time-of-Use Pricing on its head! The cheapest time to use electricity is the old Peak Load Time! BUT… Solar Power stands Time-of-Use Pricing on its head! $$$ $$ $ Maximum Supply from PV No Solar Contribution Some Solar Contribution This is a hypothetical example and will vary depending on our future energy mix.

When will Renewable Energy Dominate? We’ll be 100% Renewable by 2030 Between 2023 and 2025, the new renewable economy will govern our best practices. When will Renewable Energy Dominate? 50% 30% 80% 100% Renewable %

Your Personal Energy Economy (Today) Tiered Electrical Rates mean the more you use, the higher your rate Conservation is your best friend – use less, pay less Home Improvement like insulation and new windows helps Solar Panels and Net Metering can reduce your bill Consider the payback on big investments carefully

Your Personal Energy Economy (2025) Easier and Better Time of Use Rates – Energy is cheaper during the day! Selling Solar Energy to the grid during the day is not profitable Instead, use a storage battery to capture the surplus power When rates are high, sell power to the grid at a profit or use it to charge your Electric Vehicle instead During the day, when rates are low, run appliances that you can control remotely Or use an Energy Management System to optimize usage for you!

Getting there together Improve Make your house energy efficient. Conservation is still cheaper than generation. Electrify Replace gas appliances with electrical ones when needed. Invest in “smart” appliances you control with your phone Plan Plan to augment your home’s solar panels with storage in the next 2-3 years. You will save money and enjoy better service. Shift Loads to Peak Production Times You’ll get a new “Smart Meter” at home Time of Use (TOU) Pricing will follow LPC will begin offering incentives for “Smart Home” technology Save money by letting the utility optimize your power usage Smart Homes keep our service reliable when energy supply is variable We’re all in this together! Our Renewable Energy future is bright! What To Expect

Smart Meter? Smart Home? A Smart Meter measures and reports energy consumption and other factors at brief intervals through the day It may receive signals from the utility about rate changes or requests to increase or shed demand In a Smart Home, appliances are controlled remotely by you or by your utility You can take advantage of special offers to save money by increasing or reducing consumption Energy efficiency is maximized for everyone

Benefits of the New Energy Economy Lower Costs Wind and Sun are Free Conservation is automatic – you won’t have to think about it! Technology costs are falling fast! Better Quality of Life No Shame in running your Air Conditioner You can still use your clothes dryer LPC will help you keep your bills low and your life convenient Improve our Air Quality Better health Better vistas More enjoyable outdoor activities Reduce and Reverse Global Warming The most serious challenge facing civilization today.
