What are Cells? The basic building block of life. Remember: all living things are made of cells!

Robert Hooke While looking at cork Robert Hooke observed that it had empty spaces contained by walls (like little rooms). He called these spaces cells.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek First person to observe live cells under a microscope. protists in pond water

Matthias Schleiden German Botanist who stated that the different parts of the plant are made of cells

Schleiden “Schliding down the beanstalk” Plants are made of cells

Theodor Schwann German biologist, reached the same conclusion as Schleiden but in regards to animal tissue: animal tissue also made up of cells

Schwann “Ridin a swan” Animals are made of cells

Robert Brown English botanist; discovered the nucleus in plant cells

Rudolph Virchow “Omnis cellula e cellula”: all cells develop only from existing cells

“Saw the Show” Saw cells divide… Cells come from other cells. Virchow “Saw the Show” Saw cells divide… Cells come from other cells.

Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes Prokaryotic organisms do not have a nucleus Single celled Make up kingdoms archaea and eubacteria Eukaryotic Organisms Have a nucleus Generally more complex

Rest of class Work on cells packet Whatever you don’t finish is HW!
