Analogies & Mystery Disk Lab

Create analogies describing the early models of the atom Objectives Today I will be able to: Create analogies describing the early models of the atom Explain how indirect measurement is involved in the experiments of Rutherford and Millikan. Apply indirect measurement to formulate evidence about an experiment. Informal assessment – monitoring group interactions as they complete the lab activity and answer the questions Formal assessment – analyzing student responses to the questions Common Core Connection Reason abstractly and quantitatively Use appropriate tools strategically

Lesson Sequence Evaluate: Warm Up Explain: Model of the Atom Analogies Elaborate: Mystery Disc Lab Evaluate: Exit Ticket

Warm - Up What was Rutherford’s Gold Foil Experiment? What type of measurements did Rutherford use to obtain results in their experiment? Why? Hint: (Direct Measurement or Indirect Measurement) Gold Foil = Shot alpha particles at an atom and expected all to pass through (i.e plum pudding model) but some ricocheted and showed that there must be a center part to the atom Oil Drop = Found the mass of an oil drop and gave them an electric charge. Applied a voltage to the drops and used a current (by x-rays) in the system to stop them from dropping straight down. This allowed him to calculate the charge and see that this charge was applied to the electron (found mass and charge of the electron)

Objective Today I will be able to: Create analogies describing the early models of the atom Explain how indirect measurement is involved in the experiments of Rutherford and Millikan. Apply indirect measurement to formulate evidence about an experiment.

Analogies

Make an analogy Work with your group to create a real-life analogy for the Dalton, Thomson, Bohr and Schrodinger Models of the atom Look at Mr. Klotz’s example for guidance We will share analogies with the class 10-15 minutes

Analogy: The Cell The Cell = A big busy city Nucleus = City Hall Ribosome = Construction Site Smooth/Rough ER = Road system Cell Membrane = Border line Mitochondria = Nuclear power plant

Mystery Disk Lab Using inferences

Directions Travel to the stations to determine what is on the inside of the mystery disk. Do not rotate to the next station until Mr. Klotz gives directions to rotate We will skip part B for today When you finish, answer the questions for the lab 3-4 minutes for each mystery disc

Exit Ticket What strategies did you use to make indirect measurements using the mystery disks?
