The Haitian Revolution

Now let’s look at France’s colonies. France had a few colonies during this time period. One in particular is Saint Domingue(Haiti). Haiti was a lucrative colony for the French. Its exports reached 214 billion francs in today’s money $1,084,440,000 in 1788. Yet, the Enlightenment and the French Revolution will have major impact on Haiti.

Statistics The number of enslaved people on Saint Domingue was around 500,000. The number of French colonists on the island was around 40,000. Does anyone see a problem with these numbers? Are we seeing similarities with these revolutions as well as differences?

Toussaint L’Ouverture A savvy military leader who knew the Saint Domingue area well and trained the troops. Would become an influential icon for revolution. He wouldn’t live to see his country free, but his actions helped shaped the fight for independence.

A Quick Read Think,Pair,Share Questions to consider: Who was Toussaint? Why did he fight? How did Toussaint use France’s enemies to his advantage? Why did Napoleon cause fear for the Haitians?

The Importance of the Haitian Revolution The second country in the Western Hemisphere to gain independence and the first in Latin America. It foiled Napoleon’s desire for a world empire. A massive slave uprising shows the impact from Enlightenment thought The effects of the French Revolution The Haitian Revolution will set an example for the rest of Latin America
