Weathering and Erosion

Weathering

Weathering happens when wind and water break down rock into smaller pieces. Weathering can happen when water freeze in the cracks of rocks. When the water freezes, it takes up more space. It makes the cracks bigger. It can break the rock into pieces.

Erosion

Erosion happens when wind or moving water move sand and small rocks, or pebbles. This movement can cause more weathering and erosion. It changes the shapes of rocks.

Erosion

Cause and effect Cause Effect The weather was bad Why didn’t you go to the trip? The weather was bad. The weather was bad Cause You didn’t go to the trip Effect

Earthquakes and Volcanoes

Earthquakes An earthquake is a shaking of Earth’s surface. It can cause a land to fall or rise. An earthquake may form lakes or cause mudslides. If an earthquake happens in the ocean, it can cause a huge wave to form.

Volcano

Video

A volcano is a place where hot melted rock called lava comes out of the ground onto Earth’s surface. The lava builds up to form a mountain.

Cause and Effect What are some effects of earthquakes and volcanoes?

Landforms Earth’s surface has many kinds of landforms. Each kind has a different shape. Some are tall, and some are flat.
