Presentation transcript:

Read the following pun and write on your paper why it is funny. Warm-Up: Take a ¼ sheet. Read the following: A pun is a form of word play that uses two or more meanings of a word for a funny effect. The following is a pun: Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now. This is a play on the words “all right.” “All right” can mean “healthy” or it can mean that everything on something is “right” (not left). It is supposed to be funny because we don’t know if this means he is healthy or if he only has nothing but his left side left. Read the following pun and write on your paper why it is funny. I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. It's impossible to put down.

Agenda Mini-Lesson: Puns Group Work: Read Chapters 16 and 17. (Fluency- Comprehension) Puns and Visualization Sheet Achieve 3000

Chapters 16 and 17 (Fluency- Group Reading)

Chapters 16 and 17 (Fluency- Group Reading) Next morning the Scarecrow said to his friends: "Congratulate me. I am going to Oz to get my brains at last. When I return I shall be as other men are." "I have always liked you as you were," said Dorothy simply. "It is kind of you to like a Scarecrow," he replied. "But surely you will think more of me when you hear the splendid thoughts my new brain is going to turn out." Then he said good-bye to them all in a cheerful voice and went to the Throne Room, where he rapped upon the door. "Come in," said Oz. The Scarecrow went in and found the little man sitting down by the window, engaged in deep thought. "I have come for my brains," remarked the Scarecrow, a little uneasily. "Oh, yes; sit down in that chair, please," replied Oz. "You must excuse me for taking your head off, but I shall have to do it in order to put your brains in their proper place."

Reader’s Theater Each person takes a “role.” Read Chapters 16 and 17. Scarecrow (A) Dorothy (B) Oz (C) Lion (D) Tin Woodman (D) Narrator (A: Pages 78 and 79, B: 80 and 81, C: 82 and 83, D: 84) Read Chapters 16 and 17. Complete the “Chapter 16 and 17 Pun and Visualization Sheet” together.

Reader’s Theater Grade Everyone begins with 6 points. ____ You are following along. You know where the rest of the group is. (Lose points if I ask you where you are and you can’t tell me.) ____ Expression: Giving it life- Reading it with the proper tone and expression. ____ Know the Words. You know the words, or, use the chunking skills to attempt to say them properly. ____ Pace: Reading the piece at a proper pace. You are not “speeding” through it. And, you are not reading it so slowly that you put people to sleep. ____ Behavior: ANY misbehavior loses one point. This includes not staying focused, talking outside of your group, being rude to someone, or anything that goes against the 10 B’s or the class rules. ____Overall: Do you follow the Habits of an Effective Reader?

Closing Have you ever tried to eat a clock? It's very time consuming.
