Relation between cell shape of MC4100 lysAand the PBP3/PBP2 inhibition ratio. Relation between cell shape of MC4100 lysAand the PBP3/PBP2 inhibition ratio. The average cell dimensions have been measured, and the length/width ratio (L/2R) has been calculated. Briefly, the different shapes were obtained by varying the osmolality of the medium and the temperature and by usingpbpA (encoding PBP2) and ftsZ derivatives of MC4100 lysA. Further details can be found in the legend to Fig. 6 in reference 177. Each culture was probed for inhibition of [3H]DAP incorporation by PBP3-specific cephalexin (10 μg/ml) and PBP2-specific mecillinam (2 μg/ml).
