Agenda Modeling Natural Selection: Wooly Worms Work: Homework More Chi-Squared practice! Another opportunity to nail down your understanding of Natural Selection! Work: Turn in your M & M Lab Turn in your Chi squared practice if you haven’t Homework Study Guide Assessment Thursday
Unit One Learning Target #1 I can explain how natural selection works as a “major mechanism” for evolution I can determine if a set of data shows statistically significant variation using a Chi-Squared analysis
Wooly Worm Lab Read the Wooly Worm handout (first page only) As a table group, come up with the null hypothesis Question 1 in analysis You have 10 minutes. Be ready to explain what we are doing in this activity.
Wooly Worms The environment: the front area The trait: color (10 different colors=variation) Dark Brown = Black The question: do different colors of worms have different levels of fitness? You: predatory birds Your tasks: find and “eat” up to FIVE worms in a one minute period
Wooly Worms Null Hypothesis N=nothing Accept- no significant difference of what you observed or expected (nothing acting on the system) Reject- something is acting on the system but you might not know the reasoning behind it. Analysis: if differences are seen, are they statistically significant (i.e.: do they have a CAUSE?)?
