Settling Disputes Conflict is a natural part of life. Disputes can arise at the personal level among friends or between husband and wife battling over child custody. Disputes can occur between consumers and stores, between companies, and even between governments. It is important to know how to resolve disputes because conflict is common in many areas of life. Many conflicts are settled out of court through meditation, negotiation and arbitration.

Comparison – Adjudication v. Mediation Resolved by the Court System Resolved outside the court system by a mediator. The mediator does not decide the case. He or she helps the parties come to their own agreement.
Write down in your notes issues that have resulted in disputes with siblings, friends, bosses, coworkers or parents. In law different sides may be called “Parties” or “Disputants.” Share with the class some of your disputes.
