Hard times in the Roman Republic Cities were dirty and overcrowded Hard to find jobs because wealthy landowners had slaves to do their work Spend much time in the streets and the marketplace Entertained by government run entertainment

Roman troubles The Forum is the great public meeting place of Rome. Exchange gossip, ideas, jokes, listen to politicians speak But People wanted to go back to the old ways of Rome and its countryside.

Reason the Republic was in Crisis Romans were losing faith in their government. Gap between rich and poor grew larger Government was corrupt and the leaders did not want to give up their power In 88BC, Rome fell into a civil war. The Roman Empire teetered on the edge of collapsing.

Who was Julius Caesar? Lived from ? – 44 B.C. Took the title “Dictator for Life”

Caesar’s Rise to Power He Was a brilliant general Appointed himself head of the army and governor of Gaul (present day France) Marched his troops into Rome and started a civil war Caesar claimed victories one after the other . He declared himself dictator and in 44BC, his title became “dictator for life”.

How Caesar changed Rome Took Absolute power as dictator Lowered taxes Gave land to the poor Established Julian calendar

How we remember Caesar Today Caesar is thought of as one of the greatest military generals of all time. He is remembered as the Champion of the Masses Caesar becomes title for Roman Emperors of the Future. Julian calendar is still recognized today Seen as one of the greatest leaders, and historical figures of the classical world

The Senate thought that Caesar was going to get rid of them and try to become a king. They invited him to the Senate house and he was stabbed 35 times to death by his own friends. His assassination is one of the most famous in history.
