Topic 2: Algebraic Expressions/Equations Lesson 8 Corresponds to Sections 2.3, 2.4

Learning Targets Solve multi-step equations Write and solve multi-step equations in a context Solve equations with variables on both sides Solve equations with special solutions (no solutions or many solutions) Write and solve an equation with variables on both sides

Cornell Notes Components Initial notes from class Revisions of the notes: (Underlining, Highlighting, Circling, Identifying points of confusion, etc.) At least three questions corresponding to the notes on the left hand side Summary of the notes by answering each question you wrote with one sentence.

Cornell Notes Examples Here are some examples of Cornell Notes that would receive the full amount of points. You will have 10 minutes to silently work on your Cornell Notes tomorrow

Example 1: Solving Equations Solve 1 3 18+12𝑥 =6(2𝑥−7) 1. 6+4𝑥=12𝑥−42 (distribute on both sides) 2. 48+4𝑥=12𝑥 (add 42 to both sides) 3. 48=8𝑥 (subtract 4x from both sides) 4. 6=𝑥 (divide both sides by 8)

Example 2: Solving Equations Solve 3 2𝑏−1 −7=6𝑏−10 1. 6𝑏−3−7=6𝑏−10 (distribute 3) 2. 6𝑏−10=6𝑏−10 (combine like terms on left side) 3. 6𝑏=6𝑏 (add 10 to both sides) 4. 0=0 (subtract 6b from both sides) 5. Solution: All Real Numbers

Example 3: Solving Equations Solve 7 𝑛−1 =−2(3+𝑛) 7𝑛−7=−6−2𝑛 7𝑛=1−2𝑛 9𝑛=1 𝑛= 1 9

Example 4: Writing Equations Jada wants to buy a blanket that costs $20 and 4 pillows for her college dorm room. If 𝑥 is the cost per pillow and 𝑦 is the total cost of Jada’s purchase, write an equation that represents this situation. Total Cost = Blanket + 4 pillows 𝑦=20+4𝑥

Example 5: Application Deluxe Cleaners charges $20 to dry clean a tuxedo. They pay an employee $8/hour to clean tuxedos and use $4 worth of dry cleaning fluid on each tuxedo. The profit for this service can be determined using: 𝑝=𝑥[20− 4+8ℎ ] 𝑝= profit in dollars, ℎ= number of hours employee is paid, 𝑥= number of tuxedos cleaned Write an equation that show the amount of profit earned when 15 tuxedos are dry cleaned. 𝑝=15 20− 4+8ℎ =15 20−4−8ℎ =15[16−8ℎ] 𝑝=240−120ℎ
