Propaganda

Propaganda is… A form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position. Generally an appeal to emotion, not intellect.

Propaganda contd. Today, it is most often found in advertising, public relations, and political campaigns (i.e. political slogans). In the early 20th century, propaganda was used to promote political, economical, and nationalist ideologies.

Transmission of propaganda Common media for transmitting propaganda include: News reports; Government reports; Historical revision; Junk science; Books; Leaflets; Radio, television, movies; Posters.

Propaganda Techniques There are five main techniques used to create propaganda: Ad Hominem: attacking your opponent instead of his or her argument. Ad Nauseam: repetition of an idea. Demonizing the enemy: making “the other” to be subhuman. Quotes out of context: selectively editing quotes to fit your argument. Slogans: a brief, striking phrase that may include labelling or stereotyping.
