Coded Outline Teacher Example Discuss something you’ve done that’s made a difference in your community

Thesis As an educator from a small, rural community of northern New Mexico, I held high expectations for my students in English that made a difference in their future as essay writers, instilling confidence for college, and a structure for continuing as a life-long learning

Introductory paragraph Outline Have you ever wondered if you really make a difference? Sometimes even simple writing techniques can influence a student’s academic career. With an “I can,” even in essay writing, an attitude confidence is developed. High expectations in my English classes provide a scaffold for students to build upon as they learn life’s lessons. In-text Citation(s) if research included. As an educator from a small, rural community of northern New Mexico, I held high expectations for my students in English that made a difference in their future as essay writers, instilling confidence for college, and a structure for continuing as a life-long learning

BODY PARAGRAPH (1) CODED OUTLINE EXAMPLE Having high expectations in academic essay writing for my students is a poignant way I made a difference in my community. For example, students completed the writing process with a minimum 500 word different essay weekly. This high expectation instilled a rigorous work ethic for students to accomplish a writing process skill that required time management, attention to detail, and perseverance. Completing the writing processes eight-part steps weekly, created a discipline framework that created a habit they could count on in their academic career. Another way essay writing made a difference in their future was the opportunity to revise each essay through self-revision, peer-revision, teacher-edit revision and an impeccable final copy. This allowed the students to see not only their own errors in sentence structure or content but also to recognize it in the writing of others. This practice of seeing a better way to write an essay structurally following the expected processes, enabled students to later being able to write an essay quicker and with less errors. It was similar to practicing drills for basketball. When time for optimal performance in a big game, the ones that practiced, were able to complete the strategy for a winning victory. Although something as simple as holding high standards in essaywriting seems trivial as far as making a profound difference in a community, this very small attention to excellent pays big dividend in the future successes of students ability to communicate and gain respect from creating an influential text.

BODY PARAGRAPH (2) CODED OUTLINE EXAMPLE Another, way as an educator I believed I made a difference was to instill confidence in my students for college. For example, when they were successful in breaking down the writing process and seeing improvement from their first essay to their last essay, they knew that they could replicate this success in a college class. (this is your example/fact) In-text Citation if applicable They knew how to write an excellent essay through the process outlined in my English class therefore they did not worry about how to do the assignment. They accomplished the assignment almost effortlessly. In times past, I have had students comment to me that they were able to write a stress-free essay in less than three hours and receive an A on the assignment. (this is your example/fact) In-text Citation if applicable As well, other students were dumfounded as to how they knew how to be so confident at essaywrting and even asked them to teach them the technique. This ability allowed them to concentrate on other educational pursuits rather than worrying about how to write an essay (this is your one-two sentence explanation of the concrete detail and how it relates to your thesis/topic) Confidence can be a stepping stone to achieving goals and this stone of confidence seemed to make a difference in the lives of college-bound students’ future. (brings the paragraph to a close and relates all information back to your thesis; restates topic sentence in a new/different way.

Body paragraph (3) coded outline example Finally, as an educator upholding high expectations and step-by-step techniques for success, students invested themselves into becoming lifelong learners. For example, many students have written me letters of appreciation expressing how my English class prepared them for the “real- world.” (this is your example/fact) In-text Citation if applicable Many students have gone on to help humanity in endeavors overseas. One student went to Puerto Rico to help in the rebuilding after the hurricane. Another traveled to India to help underserved communities. They tell me that the subject matter and organization instilled a love of learning that surpassed the classroom. They wanted to make a difference in the world in any way they could (this is your one-two sentence explanation of the concrete detail and how it relates to your thesis/topic) Further, these students have learned to become vital members of society. Some have become engineers. Some have become artists. Some have become parents of future engineers and artists. But whenever I see them, they always thank me for the affect my class had on their way of thinking about learning. (this is your example/fact) In-text Citation if applicable Some have become engineers. Some have become artists. Some have become parents of future engineers and artists. But whenever I see them, they always thank me for the affect my class had on their way of thinking about learning. (this is your one-two sentence explanation of the concrete detail and how it relates to your thesis/topic) In this way, my efforts as a classroom teacher seems to have made a profound difference in the lives of students. (brings the paragraph to a close and relates all information back to your thesis; restates topic sentence in a new/different way.

Concluding paragraph coded example As an educator, having high expectations in the classroom has far reaching consequences for students’ confidence and a window to view how to become lifelong learners. (Try to flip flop the wording and restate your thesis differently. DO NOT restate it word for word) Simple structure in essay writing techniques and believing in their ability to achieve success instills confidence and creates an environment of wanting to learn throughout life. It’s not necessarily the wow events like winning a championship in sports, or even a prestigious scholarship award that seems to make a difference in a student’s life. It’s the little steps of scaffolding how to do something, practicing relentlessly, and expecting the outcome to be excellent that, in the long run, make a profound difference in the life of a student. As author Matt Belvin once said, “While it may seem small, the ripple effect of small things is extraordinary.” I like to think that my influence created a small effect that my students made extraordinary. in a new/different way.
