Writing Formulas and Naming Compounds. Binary Compound This is a compound that is composed of two elements.
 When non-metals gain electrons to become ions, the name of the ion changes its ending to “ide”.  Fluorine fluoride  Chlorine chloride  Oxygen oxide.

Here’s another example of writing the formula for an ionic compound.
Like elemental symbols, scientists use chemical formulae to provide information about compounds: Describes what elements are present in a chemical compound.

Puzzle piece Ionic Compound Instructions 1+ ion 1- ion Puzzle piece Ionic Compound Instructions 3- ion 3+ ion Sec. 3.2 2- ion 2+ ion

Step One: Write the element’s symbol with its ion charge. Ex: Calcium chloride Ca2+ Cl-

Step Two: Find puzzle pieces that match the ion charge. Ex: Calcium chloride Ca2+ Cl- 2+ ion 1- ion

Step Three: Start with the metal (positive ions) pieces, and match up non-metal (negative ions) pieces until there are no empty spaces. Sometimes you may need more than one positive ion piece Ex: Calcium chloride 1- ion 2+ ion 1- ion

Step Four: Write on the Puzzle piece what the element symbol and ion charge is. Ex: Calcium chloride.

Step Five: Count up the number of each element, and write the ionic compound formula. Ex: Calcium chloride 2+ ion 1- ion Cl- 1- ion Ca2+ Cl-

In the end it should look like this: Ca2+ Cl- CaCl2
