Competency 4 Jarvell Brown

Competency 4 Engage diversity and difference in practice.

4.1 Recognize the extent to which a culture’s structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, or create or enhance privilege and power. I understand that culture has a stronghold in this community. Especially amongst the elderly.

4.2 Gain sufficient self-awareness to eliminate the influence of personal biases and values in working with diverse groups. I have already worked with people from different cultures which do not agree with my own but my beliefs do not get in the way of my duty to my clients.

4.3 Recognize and communicate their understanding of the importance of difference in shaping life experiences. I know that not every case will be the same and they can not be treated as such.

4.4 View themselves as learners and engage those with whom they work as informants. I come to work everyday hoping to learn from not only social workers but from clients as well.
