French Colonialism France colonizes “Indochina” Mid 1800s: France violently took over Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam and called the area “Indochina” Main Goals: “Civilize” the people with Western culture, religion, language, and government. How/Why would this create problems? Economic Exploitation Forced labor in production of: tin, pepper, coal, cotton, rice, and rubber French presence was strong in Vietnam The Vietnamese faced economic oppression French dominance in cultural, educational, and political institutions.
