VIETNAM ENDS

nIXON Becomes President in 1968. He told Americans that he would withdraw troops, which he did not immediately do.

Anti-war Anti-war movement was the most extensive in U.S. history. Johnson lost all popularity due to the war and he knew he could not win another election.

VIETNAMIZATION Nixon’s policy of removing American troops and replacing them with S. Vietnamese troops. This led to a decline in opposition.

Nixon’s secrets He continued to bomb secretly. He did not want to lose the war. He invaded Cambodia and the Viet Cong in 1970. Invasion ignited more protests. *Banned use of Hoovercrafts

Kent state protest College campus in Ohio that was destroyed in protest. 4 students were killed.

Troops are withdrawn 1973-Nixon withdraws troops. A civil war continues in Vietnam for 2 more years. The country eventually becomes entirely communist.

We Don’t always win Longest and most unsuccessful war in U.S. history. 58,000 Americans died. Cost - $150 billion It proved that the U.S. could not stop communism everywhere.
