Fig. 1 The distribution of quantitative QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) results among QFT positives in different age groups. The study participants with positive QFT results were classified into four groups by age group. The median value of the QFT quantitative result was insignificantly decreased associated with increasing age (a). Some data from our previous population-based study were re-analysed and QFT-positive participants were classified into seven groups according to age [5]. The median value of the QFT quantitative result presented a parabola-like distribution. The middle-aged groups showed a higher interferon-γ (IFN-γ) release compared with the younger and older groups (b). The horizon black line represents the median value and the black dots represent QFT quantitative values of each participant. Fig. 2 The relation of mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection with smoking status among smokers. Smokers were stratified by the number of cigarettes per day and smoking years. Heavy smokers showed higher QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) positivity. Cochran–Armitage trend test and multiple logistic regression analysis (adjusted for gender, age, alcohol drinking, hepatitis B virus infection, hepatitis C virus infection, silicosis and immune status) were used for data analysis. The black square represents adjusted odds ratio and horizontal line represents 95% CI. Supplementary Figure 1 The relation between alcohol drinking and mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection stratified by potential confounding factors. Individuals with alcohol consumption were more likely to be infected by TB. However, such relationship was no longer presented after stratification by smoking status and gender. Gray bar represents individuals with alcohol drinking habits, meanwhile, white dotted bar represents individuals without alcohol drinking habits.
