The impact of PE and Sports premium funding 2017/18 Grove Academy (Evaluated under previous leadership 2017 – 2018)

Our sport premium focus 2017 - 2018 To deliver high quality PE lessons in line with the National Curriculum To improve participation in PE and physical activity levels To improve the health and fitness of all our children focusing on healthy lifestyles Increase the opportunity for children to take part in competition

The school sport premium money for the academic year 17/18 was spent in the following ways… The academy has a specialist PE teacher that delivers all curriculum PE and extra-curricular clubs. The specialist helps to support all other teaching staff with their understanding of the teaching of PE and assessment. A whole school PE assessment toolkit has been created and developed during the year by the specialist PE teacher for assessment in both fitness and skills. New community links have been developed and improved with more external specialist organisations coaching after school clubs. Children have had the opportunity to compete in both intra and inter school competitions through the town sports in a range of different sports. New playground equipment has been purchased to uplevel the sports activities available during break and lunch times. Sports play leaders have been introduced and completed full play ground training through the local school sports coordinator.

Pupils completed baseline testing, and then completed the bleep test three times over the year to indicate if their fitness scores had improved. The majority of children throughout the school have improved on their current score for the bleep test or maintained their previous score. We will continue to keep improving these scores into year 2018/19. In order for the pupils to see what level of fitness they were working at, this temperature table was used. Pupils could use this to self assess and to see if improvements were made.

Alongside our own teaching staff, external clubs continued to deliver extra-curricular activities to provide our pupils with a wider range of opportunities to participate in activities.

Competition Grove continued to be part of the Hanley Schools Sports Association to encourage and provide the opportunity for children to compete in competitive sport against other schools. We increased our range of competitions from 5 – 7. The competitions we entered this year were: Hanley Schools Football League Girls Football Festival Dance Extravaganza 2018 at the Victoria Hall Change4life Festival High5 Netball Dance Showcase Town Athletics

Sports Day 2018 Acting on feedback from pupils and parents from our previous sports day, our sports day this year was a great success, with every pupil taking part in at least 2 athletics events. Every class were placed into a coloured team – red, yellow, green and blue. To encourage team work, each coloured team worked together across years 3 – 6. At the end of the event all the points were added up for each colour to find our overall winner. Every child did exceptionally well, showed great team work and continuous enthusiasm throughout the whole event.

Bikeability This year we continued with our Bikeability training with a further 15 year 4 pupils completing their level 1 cyclist training and 20 year 5/6 pupils completing their level 2 cyclist training. These certificates not only encouraged children to be confident and enjoy riding their bike but also: Level 1: Improved confidence in mounting and dismounting their bike Start, pedal and stop with control Pedal using the correct gears Keep control of the bike whilst looking around Ride safely around pedestrians Level 2: Prepare for safe road cycling Start and finish an on road journey safely Recognise typical hazards Know where to ride on the road and do this safely Pass parked vehicles on side roads
