Session 11: Making revisions based on response groups Concept: Revising and Editing a Memoir

Memoirists create a revision plan using a repertoire of decisions. Teaching point Copy in your NB: Memoirists create a revision plan using a repertoire of decisions.

Let’s look quickly at my revised draft Take a look at my Draft and my Revision Plan: My process: Wrote a draft Got response group feedback Made a revision plan Revised my draft! I will read you 3 things: My Original Draft My Response Group Feedback My New Draft (with a Think-Aloud!)

Model revision plan, cont. What do you notice is different from my first draft to my second draft? What do you notice about my revision plan? What did I want to focus on? Which comments from my response group do you notice I used?

Active engagement Preparation Task: Reread your response group notes. Write a revision plan based on some, not all, of your notes. (use my handout if you need to!) Turn-Read-and-Talk: Read the memoir draft and revision plan to a partner. Take turns commenting on, adding to, or changing the revision plans.

Active engagement, cont. Let’s share 2 or 3 Revision Plans. Volunteers? What are the most common types of revisions we see? Write these in your Writer’s Notebook. Anything else you notice?

Independent practice Mini-Task: Now, apply the revision commitments you have made in your plan to the memoir-draft. Annotate your revised draft by underlining, highlighting, and labeling the revisions. I will come around to conference during this time

Turn and talk With the same partner from earlier today, take turns reading your revised memoirs. Listeners will point out an effective revision and explain how it impacted their understanding of the memoir.

Reflection Copy in NB: Reflection #11: Being a Reader—Listening to A Reader What did you learn from responding to the writing of your classmate? What did you notice in the writing of your classmate that helped you see your writing in a new way?

Homework Revise your memoir based on your Revision Plan. Bring a new typed copy in Folder to our next class and STAPLE your Revision Plan to the back of it!
