Presentation transcript:

Session 3: Building a Writing Community Concept: Becoming a Community of Memoirists

Teaching Point Writers in a community use non- judgmental response so all writers feel free to take risks and feel comfortable exposing stories that matter and parts of themselves to their classmates.

Mini-Task: Response Groups In response groups of 3 or 4 class members, take turns reading and responding to your notebook entries Use the Non-Judgmental Response starters to respond to your peers’ entries (you can also use TAG!) Writers: TAKE NOTES on your response group’s comments in your NB

Mini-Task: Response Groups Process: Writer chooses ONE draft to share and read aloud After reading aloud, peers use the Non- Judgmental Response cues Writer takes notes in NB on responses Choose a timer: 5-8 minutes per writer!

Daily Reflection In your notebooks, date and label the following: Reflection #3: Being a Reader – Listening to a Reader What did you learn from responding to the writing of your classmates? What did the response group notice that helped you see your writing in a new way?

Label in journal “After Response Group Write 1” Make some changes or add to your drafts based on your group’s responses to your writing. ***COLLECTING JOURNALS TOMORROW***
