AP LANG 8/22/23 – Day 9 & 10– Corn Pone Discussion Questions (picture day and style questions)

Bellwork-5 min. Materials: Questions from up front, annotated Corn Pone Opinions, writing utensil. Tasks: 1.) Discuss last night’s annotation with the people near you. Where did you find the appeals?

Objectives for today-1 min. Close read Corn Pone in order to: - Identify how purpose develops throughout a text. - infer purpose - i.e. what is the argument? What was the author hoping to achieve?

Discussion Questions to develop insight to purpose. Let’s read the questions provided aloud to help us identify the depths of Twain’s argument.

Group Class Work – 15 min Working with ALL members of your group, compose a thorough answer for your given question, making sure to use specific textual evidence found in Twain’s essay. Work as a group, but record your group answer on your own paper… as you will ultimately be responsible for having answers to each discussion question.

Discussion Please choose a speaker to share your group’s response. Let’s share. Take notes on other answers as you wish…

Discussion Debrief How do the five discussion questions guide us to greater clarity and depth to Twain’s purpose? How do they help us with the overall understanding of the Rhetorical Situation?

Homework Revise and add to your detailed rhetorical triangle on Corn Pone Opinions.
