Chapter 20 summary By Jaime DaPonte

Setting This chapter takes place in Lucie and Charles Darney’s house

Quotes “your good enough to say so as a fashion of speech but I don’t mean any fashion of speech indeed when I say I wish we might be friends I scarcely mean quite that either.” “The curse of those occasions is heavy upon me”

The Talk When Charles and Lucie return home they’re visited by Sydney Carton and he pulls Charles aside to ask if they’re still friends and Charles replies “I thought we already were friends” Carton says Darney is a “Dissolute Dog” After the conversation Carton returns to his normal self

The Dinner Later over dinner miss Pross ,the dr.,Darney, and Mr.Lorry discuss the conversation and Darney refers to Carton as a problem After dinner Darney finds Lucie in an unusually competitive state and she tells him he should think thoughtful of Carton

Literary Devices “everyone talked about Sydney as a problem” metaphor “we’ll at any rate you know me as a dissolute dog” metaphor “but I will not quarrel with YOUR light answer” amplification

The Heart Lucie tells Charles he needs to be mare generous, kind, and always forgive his faults because Lucie knows Carton very rarely reveals his heart and she know his heart was hurt

THE END (applause)
