Sedimentary Rocks How do sedimentary rocks form? What are the three major types of sedimentary rocks? How are sedimentary Rocks used? Sedimentary Rocks

How does sedimentary rock form? “Sediment” means pieces Weathering and erosion: freezing, thawing, rain, acid, and plants all break up rock into small pieces. Deposition: to deposit… water carries these small pieces of rock and deposits them into a lake or ocean. Compaction: thick layers build up, pushing down on the layers beneath making them solid Cementation: Some minerals dissolve making a kind of cement to cement the rock pieces together.

What are the three Major Types of Sedimentary Rocks? Clastic Rocks: formed when rock pieces are squeezed. Common Clastic rocks are shale and sandstone Organic Rocks: plants and animals are deposited in layers Common Organic Rocks are Coal and Limestone (what FL is mostly made of)

Chemical Rocks When minerals dissolve in a solution and then form crystals Rock salt is made of the mineral halite

How are sedimentary Rocks used? They are mainly used for tools and building materials Older uses include arrow heads The stone is soft and can be cut easily into blocks or slabs. Famous sandstone building
