Central Idea The main point of a text written as An objective Summary of what you read

What does Objective mean? IT is… It is not… Explicitly stated in text Unbiased Important details Opinions Inferences Nonessential details

Questions to ask yourself: What happened in the text? What were the key events? Who were the key players? How would I summarize what I just read?

What is the Central Idea of UP? Carl braves the dangerous land of South America. Carl and Russel discover a dog named Doug in S.A. Carl learns how important it is to follow your dreams. Carl travels to South America to follow his dreams.

Theme the message or moral that can be learned from a text

What does Theme Mean? General and could apply to anyone IT is… It is not… General and could apply to anyone Supported by the events in the text Specific to the text or characters A paraphrase from the text My personal reaction to the text

Questions to ask yourself: What can I learn from the text? How does the text apply to my life? What does the author want me to realize after reading it? What was the moral of that story?
