Foundation High School Plan FHSP W/ Endorsements FHSP/DLA Endorsements Meet all requirements of the FHSP with Endorsements Complete Algebra II as one of the required math credits 4 English (Eng I, Eng II, Eng III, and advanced English) 4 Math (to include Alg I and Geom) 4 Science (to include Bio and Lab Science) 3 Social Studies (W. Geog or W. Hist, US History, Gov’t, and Econ) Fine Art – 1 credit PE – 1 credit Foreign Language - 2 credits of the same language Electives – 7 credits NOTE: Electives choices will be dependent upon the endorsement. Foundation High School Plan The purpose of the FHSP graduation plan is to…. Instill flexibility in public education by enabling students to either pursue a traditional path into colleges and universities or move directly into the workforce (ex. Welding, Cosmetology certifications). An Endorsement is similar to a college major. Completion of an Endorsement will allow students to graduate from high school with knowledge and/or experience in the college major they wish to pursue. Students can earn an endorsement in one of the following areas: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Business and Industry Public Services Arts and Humanities Multidisciplinary Studies Foundation High School Plan
Public Service Endorsement Students who desire to make a lasting contribution to society by serving their fellow man should consider the public service endorsement. Core Class Selection Dual Credit (D) Advanced Placement (AP) Students may receive college credit only if they take the AP exam and score a 3 or higher on the exam. AP courses and exams do not qualify as dual credit. There is a fee ($90 average cost) to take a AP exam for college credit. Check the AP credit policy at the college of choice to confirm what score is required in order to award credit. Students may receive college credit if they pass the course with a college grade of a “C”. Core Class Selection
Dual Credit/AP Comparison Advanced Placement (AP) Dual Credit Description The AP Program allows students to take college-level courses and exams while in high school. A strong score on the culminating exam may result in college credit or placement. Dual Credit allows high school students to earn both high school and college credit . In order to earn college credit, the course must be passed with a college grade of C or higher. Credit College credit may be awarded depending on the student’s score on the AP examination. Individual colleges and universities, not the College Board or the AP Program, determine course credit and placement. High school and college credit through Lone Star College (LSC) is awarded when the student passes the course. College/ University Acceptance Accepted at thousands of universities around the world. Typically requires a score of 3 or higher on the AP exam. Students should check with their chosen universities to see if AP credit may be awarded. Accepted at public (and some private) colleges and universities in Texas as well as many outside of Texas. Requires semester average of college C or better for transferability. Students should check with their chosen universities to see if Dual credit may be accepted. Eligibility Open to any high school student. Dual credit courses are offered during summer as well as the school year. Deadlines to be aware of: -Request a dual credit course in Choices 360 on course selection day January 24th -Submit qualifying TSI test scores or test exemptions to Mrs. Zinnia Deleon by April 18th. -Deadline to submit summer dual credit course request – April 18th. -Deadline to submit enrollment forms for the 2019-20 school year Dual Credit program – May 3rd. Students earn 0.5 credit for each class they successfully pass each semester. Students can average to pass to regain credit Example: 1st semester = 65 (earns no credit) 2nd semester = 75 (earns 0.5 credit) Average for the semester = 70 (regain 0.5 credit from 1st semester) Students must earn 6 credits at the end of their 9th grade year to be classified as a Sophomore. Students must earn 12 credits at the end of their 10th grade year to be classified a Junior. Course Basics
Important Algebra Requirement Successful completion of Algebra 1 is necessary before enrolling in any other math course. Any student who has not successfully completed Algebra 1 and therefore unable to enroll in a sequenced math course the following year will put themselves in danger of not being able to meet graduation requirements on time. Texas Tech Correspondence Course Texas Tech Credit By Exam NOTE – Semester grades are viewable in the Home Access Center (HAC). A plan for credit retrieval will need to be made for any unearned credit.
Important Information and Dates Counselors will be working with FRESHMEN to complete their course selections on January 23rd and 24th. Counselors will be working with SOPHOMORES to complete their course selections on January 30th and 31st. Choices 360 will be open to students and parents to make changes until February 15th. Classes fill up very quickly so it is important to select wisely. Students will receive a course verification sheet at the beginning of April and the beginning of May. Parents can view their child’s Personal Graduation Plans, Class Selections, Endorsement, Goals, Interests Inventories along with much more on www.choices360.com.
