A local pizzeria sells a small pizza with one topping for $6 and a small pizza with three toppings for $8. What is the charge for a plain small pizza? What is the price per topping?

Solution P + t = $6 P + 3t = $8 -t -t P = $6 – t ($6 – t) + 3t = $8 -6 -6 2t = $2 2 2 t = $1 Since P + t = $6, P +$1 = $6, so P = $5!

Example 1 5x + 4y = 5 y = 5x

Example 2 y = ½x – 8 y = -4x + 1
