MAJOR SKELETAL MUSCLES AND MUSCLE GROUPS

MUSCLES OF THE HEAD AND NECK Occipito(frontalis): frown, surprise, wrinkles in forehead Orbicularis oculi: wink “closes eye” Orbicularis oris: pucker “compresses lips” Temoralis and masseter: open and close jaw Sternocleidomastoid: bow (flexes and rotates head) Trapezius: moves the shoulder and extends the head (posture) Nasalis: flare nares

MUSCLES OF UPPER EXTREMITIES Pectoralis major: flex and abduct upper arm Latissimus dorsi: extend upper arm Deltoid: abduct upper arm Biceps brachii: flex lower arm Triceps brachii: extend lower arm

MUSCLES OF THE TRUNK Internal and external obliques: depress ribs Transverse and rectus abdominis: compresses abdomen “6 pack”

MUSCLES OF THE LOWER EXTREMITIES Sartorius: flexes and rotates thigh and leg Gluteus maximus: extends femur and rotates it Gluteus medius: abducts and rotates thigh Quadriceps group: extend Hamstring group: Gastrocnemius: flexes foot and extends lower leg Tibialis anterior: dorsifexes foot Rectus femoris: flexes thigh and extends leg
