What to Annotate - Words you don’t know - Literary devices or techniques - Short summary of a section of information - Connections to previous knowledge - Personal comments; have a dialogue with the text!

Why should you annotate? Let’s discuss . . . .

Why to annotate? Reason # 1 - It helps you to understand what you read - It makes you read more critically and more analytically (This means that you read closely and think while you read) Note: This is likely to improve reading scores!

Why to annotate? Reason # 2 - It makes the information usable - You can actually use the information whenever you need to (class discussions and essays) Note: This is likely to improve writing grades, and you will stand out in class discussions!

Why to annotate? Reason # 3 - It helps you to remember information more because it imprints information in your memory Note: This is likely to improve test and quiz grades!

How should you annotate? Let’s discuss . . . .

AND How to annotate? Underline, circle, highlight words or phrases make a note in the margin Keep it short and to the point!

How to annotate? Words you don’t know Circle the word Take a guess based on the context, and write your guess in the margin (when you have time, look it up. Or look it up right away if it is essential to understand at that moment.)

How to annotate? Short summary of a section of information When you read important information, highlight it and put a note in the margin that labels what that information is about
