Solutions and Concentration To play the movies and simulations included, view the presentation in Slide Show Mode. Wednesday 2/5/14
Important Definition A solution is a mixture of 2 or more substances in a single state.
Parts of a Solution SOLUTE – the part of a solution that is being dissolved (usually the lesser amount) SOLVENT – the part of a solution that dissolves the solute (usually the greater amount) Solute + Solvent = Solution Solute Solvent Example solid Steel (Fe + C) liquid Sugar water Mio in water gas Pop! Atmosphere
Solubility Solubility describes how well a solute dissolves in a solvent “Like dissolves like”: things with similar IMFs will be soluble Sugar in water vs. oil in water
Saturation Solutions can be classified as saturated or unsaturated. A saturated solution contains the maximum quantity of solute that dissolves at that temperature. An unsaturated solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve at a particular temperature
Saturated…there is more sugar than can dissolve!
Concentration The amount of solute in a solution is given by its concentration. The units we will use for concentration are Molarity (M).
Molarity = ( M ) moles solute liters of solution Moles is a way to quickly count atoms—there are 6.02x1023 atoms in a mole!
PROBLEM: Calculate the Molarity of a salt solution with 2 PROBLEM: Calculate the Molarity of a salt solution with 2.0 moles of salt in a 4.0L solution. Molarity ( M ) = moles solute liters of solution
Sometimes you are not given moles, but grams instead Sometimes you are not given moles, but grams instead. Moles is related to mass by the following: Moles = grams Molar mass (from Ptable) You need to start by finding moles!
PROBLEM: Dissolve 5. 00g of NiCl2 in enough water to make PROBLEM: Dissolve 5.00g of NiCl2 in enough water to make .250L of solution. Calculate the Molarity. Step 1: Calculate moles of NiCl2 Step 2: Calculate Molarity
