Lesson 52 review Remember, answer question in complete sentences! In your opinion, what was the main effect of the U.S. government’s deception about it’s policies and military conduct in Vietnam? How would you account for the cold homecoming American soldiers received when they returned from Vietnam? In the end, do you think the United States’ withdrawal from Vietnam was a victory for the U.S. or a defeat? Explain. Should citizens rebel against the government? How should government respond to citizen protests?

In your opinion, what was the main effect of the U. S In your opinion, what was the main effect of the U.S. government’s deception about it’s policies and military conduct in Vietnam? Americans became increasingly distrustful of the government Examples of distrust include responses to the Pentagon Papers. The Pentagon Papers was a 7,000 page document written by former Defense Secretary McNamara in 1967-68. Among other things, the papers showed that the gov had intended on entering the war even when President Johnson had told America he had no intention of sending troops to Vietnam and that it showed that there were never any plans of leaving Vietnam as long as North Vietnam persisted fighting Congress also repealed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution Congress passed the War Powers Act: the president must inform Congress w/ in 48 hours of sending U.S. forces into a hostile area & the troops may only stay 90 days w/out Congressional approval

How would you account for the cold homecoming American soldiers received when they returned from Vietnam? Some Americans blamed the war’s failure on the soldiers Some Americans judged veterans’ who spoke out against the war The My Lai Massacre might have tarnished the image of all U.S. soldiers Under Lieutenant Calley’s orders on March 16, 1968 they were told, “kill anything that breaths”. On that day over 200 women, children, and elderly, south Vietnamese were murdered by American troops.

In the end, do you think the United States’ withdrawal from Vietnam was a victory for the U.S. or a defeat? Explain. Victory – we left on our own terms, ended military spending, stopped American casualties, ended an unpopular, listened to the voice of the American people, could of provoked response from Soviets or China if we had stayed longer, passed War Powers Act Defeat – unable to claim victory because North Vietnam didn’t surrender, all of Vietnam became communist, 400,000 South Vietnamese imprisoned, over one million flee country and become refugees, communism also spread to neighboring Cambodia (Khmer Rouge was responsible for 1.7 million deaths) & Laos, 58,000 American casualties, 300,000 wounded Vietnam memorial “The Wall” Washington D.C.
