Bellringer Sept 17 On the piece of scrap paper, write down which poem you liked better - “If” or “Fifteen” – and why.

The Graphic Organizer! Your homework was to finish the graphic organizer. Let’s check what we have. Take out your organizer! – look at the organizer document with our notes on it.

How to start the response 1. Start the response by introducing both the poems. Both “If” by Rudyard Kipling and “Fifteen” by William Stafford show how to become a man. Growing up in a good way is shown by both Stafford in “Fifteen” and Kipling in “If.”

Answer the question Both poems demonstrate the theme _____________________________________

How to talk about the categories Look at the similarities column. Choose at least three of the categories which can be related to the common theme. State in your introduction those categories and that the poets use them to build the theme.

Body paragraphs This is a recommendation for organizing your response Paragraph 1 – common category – what they do similar and how it shows the theme Then how they do it differently Kipling does this…. Stafford does this… However, even though there are differences, both poems use _____ to show the theme. Paragraph 2 (repeat the organization) Paragraph 3 (repeat the organization)

Closing Paragraph Remind us of what is important about the message that both poems share Remind us of the key ideas from the body paragraphs Remind us of why going through the transition stage in a rite of passage is important.

Write the rough draft and then revise. Rough draft is due on TUESDAY. Bring in the final copy for Thursday, Sept 24rd with the rough draft and the scoring guide/directions.

Ticket out Use the BELLRINGER PAPER which I returned! What is due on Tuesday? What is due on Thursday? Hint – the final draft of your poem response.
