What is Ecology? Study of the interactions of organisms and their environment. Deals with biotic and abiotic factors within the biosphere.

Examples: Daisies Human Dead raccoon Our classroom fish Microorganisms Water Sunlight Oxygen Dirt Temperature Definition: Factors that are alive or were once alive. Non-living factors that affect the living organisms. Word: Biotic Abiotic

DO NOW: 3-2-1 With your table partner Name three biotic factors from our environment: _________________ Name two abiotic factors from our environment: Name one way abiotic factors might affect biotic factors. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What is a Biosphere? Includes all organisms that live at or near the earth’s surface in a life-supporting zone.

Part of Biosphere Description Ecosystem Community Population Habitat Species

Biosphere

What is an Ecosystem? an area in which living things interact with each other and their environment. Ex: lake, ocean, desert, puddle, etc. Oneida Lake Ecosystem

What is a Community? Refers to all the populations in an ecosystem Ex: lake community could include populations of trout, geese, and cattails.

What is a Population? Made up of all organisms in an ecosystem that belong to the same species.

What is a Habitat? An area or place where an organism lives. Is like the organism’s “address.” Ex: Dragonfly- edge of water on Oneida Lake.

What is a Species? group of organisms that are physically similar and can reproduce with each other to produce fertile offspring.

DO NOW: What would be the habitat for the following species… A woodpecker = A salmon = A deer =

So what makes up an ecosystem?

What are Producers? organisms that use the sun’s energy to make food.

What is a Decomposer? type of consumer that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms. Ex: The mushrooms on this tree are decomposers.

What are Consumers? organisms that obtain energy by eating another organism. Are there different types of consumers?

Consumers Herbivores Omnivores Carnivores Scavengers eat only animals eat only plants Consumers Scavengers eats only DEAD animals. Omnivores eat BOTH plants and animals

DO NOW: Fill in the flow chart

DO NOW: What type of “eater” would each organism be? Cow= Herbivore Lion = Carnivore Human = Omnivore Vulture = Scavenger bacteria = Decomposer
