Government Makes and enforces laws, regulates business and trade, and provides aid to people. Help to shape cultures and economies of countries as well as the daily lives of the people who live there.

Types of Government Democracy Monarchy Dictatorship Communism

Democracy Government in which the people elect leaders and rule by majority. Citizens are free to choose representatives to make and enforce laws. Citizens have freedoms and rights which are upheld by the government. Example – U.S.

Monarchy Government ruled directly by a king or queen King/queen has executive, legislative, and judicial powers All the power is held by one person Citizens have few freedoms and rights One of the oldest governments in the world Example – Saudi Arabia

Dictatorship Government in which a single, powerful ruler has total control. Ruler often leads by force Citizens are often NOT free Citizens have few rights and NO say in the government Example – Iraq under Saddam Hussein

Communism Government in which the government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country. Communist leaders are not elected by citizens Government strictly controls the country’s economy and daily life of its people Citizens have restricted rights and few freedoms Example – North Korea
